S. Korea Seeks UNESCO Designation for Ssireum

The Korea Ssireum Association has submitted “ssireum,” or Korean traditional wrestling, for UNESCO designation on the list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Two professors from Yongin University said on Tuesday that the association has worked for the UNESCO designation since 2013 to put Korean traditional wrestling on the list.

The professors said that they submitted the application to the Cultural Heritage Administration.

If ssireum is included in the UNESCO list, it would be the country’s 20th intangible heritage of humanity.
