The Cultural Heritage Administration(CHA) said Wednesday that it has registered the first textbook written for Korean nurses as a new cultural heritage.

The textbooks, written by American missionary Margaret Jane Edmunds, consist of two books—one published in 1908 and the other in 1910.

The textbooks were used at the Training School for Nurses set up at Pogunyogwan, Korea’s first women's hospital that was founded by Edmunds. The textbooks are now kept at the Seoul Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

The administration said it decided to register the textbooks as a cultural heritage thanks to their scarcity value as well-preserved historical materials.

It also said the textbooks will significantly aid in the research of Korea’s history of modern medical services as well as in the Korean translation of medical terms.

Meanwhile, the CHA made an advance notice that it will register as a cultural heritage an outer garment that belonged to the late Yu In-seok, the leader of the "righteous troops" who fought against the Japanese colonialists.
