Independence Hall Receives Restored Manuscript of Historic Dictionary

The Independence Hall of Korea announced Thursday that it has received the final revised version of a manuscript for the publication of the country's very first Korean language dictionary, which underwent restoration.

The manuscript was drafted between 1929 and 1942 by the Joseon Language Society, a group that operated during the Japanese colonial period. The National Archives of Korea recently completed the restoration of the historic manuscript.

The document is a valuable asset historically and linguistically as it demonstrates the spirit of Korean scholars who sought to preserve the Korean language through the country's inaugural Korean language dictionary in the face of colonial Japan's oppression and efforts to obliterate the Korean language.

In March last year, the Independence Hall requested the National Archives to conduct restoration work on the manuscript as it was seriously damaged.
