Miracle Sea Road Festival Opens in Jindo

A festival celebrating the miraculous parting of the sea has opened on Jindo Island, off South Korea's southwestern tip.

Dubbed the "modern day Moses' miracle," the Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival is being held from Thursday to Sunday.

The sea-parting phenomenon is caused by tidal differences as seawater separates to unveil a two-point-eight kilometer-long, 40-meter-wide seabed.

The venue was designated as National Scenic Attraction No. 9 in 2000.

The four-day festival will also showcase a number of state-designated intangible cultural assets such as "ganggang sullae," a South Korean group folk dance indigenous to Jindo.

Events and programs catering to foreign tourists are also scheduled including a global "ssireum" or Korean wrestling tournament as well as K-pop performances.
