The Seoul Metropolitan Government has awarded Moon Byung-gil, the head of the Seoul Association of the Deaf(SDEAF), with an award for enhancing the rights of the disabled in the city.

According to Seoul city officials on Monday, Moon, who is hard of hearing, won the award along with five others.

Moon has conducted volunteer work as a member of the SDEAF since 1990, when there was a lack of sign language services for the deaf.

In 2009, he founded a school for training talented sign language interpreters. In 2014, Moon founded a sign language center attached to the women’s league of the SDEAF.

Seoul officials said Moon was awarded this year’s rights award for the disabled due to his dedication to helping other deaf people.
