Cleaning Work Conducted on Historic Statues in Gwanghwamun Square

The statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin at Seoul's Gwanghwamun Square were cleaned on Monday.

Other facilities in the square are regularly cleaned but washing work for the bronze statues is conducted once a year given that it requires specific equipment and experts.

The cleaning date was set on a weekday to minimize inconveniences for tourists. The annual spring cleaning work was carried out based on the results of a safety test conducted on the two statues last month by experts from various fields.

The test found that the statues’ exteriors were in relatively good condition and that there were no signs of new cracks and corrosion or damage.
