Wartime Sex Slavery Victims Donate Funds for Japan Quake Victims

Two elderly victims of Tokyo's sexual slavery during World War II have donated funds for those affected by the recent earthquakes in Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture.

The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan War & Women’s Human Rights Museum, a civic activist group, confirmed that 90-year-old Kim Bok-dong and and 87-year-old Gil Won-ok donated one million won and 300-thousand won, respectively. The group said it would send the donations to Japan.

Kim and Gil also urged those gathered in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul for a weekly protest known widely as the "Wednesday rally" to donate to quake victims. The weekly rallies aim to press Japan to formally apologize for its coercion of sex slaves during the war.

Kim said she was not able to just sit and watch the wreckage in the aftermath of the quakes. She said she and the other sex slavery victims were not fighting with Japan and she urged others to add bits to the donation.

Japan's Kyodo News reported on Kim and Gil urging others to contribute after they donated the funds.

A magnitude-seven tremor struck the Kyushu Island prefecture last Thursday, while a seven-point-three magnitude quake rocked the same region early Saturday.
