Diplomatic delegations and bereaved family members of Korean War veterans from four British Commonwealth countries will visit the UN Memorial Cemetery in South Korea to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers.
The Busan Metropolitan Government said Friday that the families of the Korean War veterans from Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand will visit the UN cemetery located in Daeyeon-dong, Busan, on Saturday.
The family members, who will lay flowers before the graves of their loved ones, include Michael Stone, a son of late Lieutenant Colonel James R. Stone.
The elder Stone, known better as Jim Stone, was the commander of the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry(2PPCLI), which was the first Canadian military unit deployed during the Korean War.
He led the 27th British Commonwealth Infantry Brigade during the Battle of Kapyong on April 23rd, 1951, where he and his soldiers fended off a massive advance by the Chinese military.
The families were invited by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, which has arranged visits to the cemetery for relatives since 1975. Around 30-thousand family members of the Korean War veterans buried in the cemetery have visited the venue so far.
