Joseon Tongsinsa Festival to Open on Friday in Busan

A festival symbolizing cultural exchanges between South Korea and Japan will take place from Friday to Sunday of this week.

The Joseon Tongsinsa Festival, which is a representative event of Busan, will be made up of a total of 12 programs, including a street performance by art groups of South Korea and Japan and a peace procession.

Around 17-hundred members of culture and arts groups, as well as civic groups from both home and abroad will take part in the peace procession.

In particular, this year’s event will feature elements from Japan’s "Yamakasa" festival and South Korea’s "chajeon nori," a traditional battle game of Andong.

Also this year, 12 South Koreas and Japanese performers will put on a special show to express hope for the listing of records on the Joseon Tongsinsa goodwill missions onto the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

The Joseon Tongsinsa refers to diplomatic envoys that Korea's Joseon Dynasty sent to Japan between 1607 and 1811. The envoys were regarded to symbolize South Korea and Japan's peaceful diplomacy and cultural exchanges.

The Joseon Tongsinsa Festival has been held every year since 2002.
