S. Korean Rhythmic Gymnast Tops Asian Championships

South Korean rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae has won the individual all-around event at the Rhythmic Gymnastics Asian Championships for the third time in her career.

The 22-year-old on Monday earned 18-point-200 points in ribbon and 18-point-600 points in clubs on the second day of the individual all-around program at the Asian Gymnastics Union(AGU)’s event in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Son also earned 18-point-450 points in hoop and 18-point-500 points in the ball event the day before for a combined 73-point-750 points in the four programs, earning the top spot over runner-up Elizaveta Nazarenkova of Uzbekistan, who earned 71-point-450 points.

Son’s individual all-around win comes after she topped the Asian Championship in 2013 and last year.

The AGU’s Asian Championships are held every two years and was slated to be held next year, but took place this year due to scheduling problems.

Son will seek to sweep the games after earning tickets to all four apparatus finals of the competition, which are open to the top eight gymnasts in each category from the individual all-around. The finals will be held in Tashkent on Tuesday.
