No. of Visitors Jump at Tourist Destinations during Children's Day Weekend

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism says major domestic tourist destinations saw a surge in the number of visitors during the recent four-day Children’s Day weekend.

According to the ministry, it is estimated that four palaces and the Jongmyo Shrine in Seoul attracted 419-thousand people throughout the four-day holiday that ran from May fifth to the eighth, more than double the number posted in the same period last year.

During the extended weekend, the numbers of visitors to the National Museum, the National Folk Museum and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art also jumped by 47 percent, 71 percent and 85 percent, respectively.

The number of visitors to five major amusement parks, including Everland and Lotte World, increased 63 percent between May fifth and the seventh, compared to the same period last year.  In particular, the number surged some 114 percent on the May sixth temporary holiday.

The ministry said the growth is attributed to the designation of the temporary holiday and various discounts and free admissions offered at major tourist attractions.
