Constitutional Court Set to Discuss Exclusive Hangeul Law

The Constitutional Court is set to hold a hearing on the Framework Act on Korean Language eleven years after the law designated the indigenous Hangeul as the sole official writing system.

The court said that the hearing will be held from Thursday afternoon after civic groups filed a petition in 2012 over the constitutionality of the 2005 law, which has banned the mixed use of Korean and Chinese characters in official documents and textbooks.

The civic groups claimed in the petition that the law violates the right to appreciate full literary culture while depriving the citizens of their rights to learn Chinese characters.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which handles the nation's Korean language policies, said that the law is aimed at promoting a desirable Korean language culture and reflects the nation’s duty.
