"The Wailing" Tops Domestic Box Office on Opening Day

South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin’s new movie “Gokseong" or "The Wailing" has topped the domestic box office on its opening day Wednesday, ousting American superhero film “Captain America: Civil War.”

According to the Korean Film Council's combined box office tally on Thursday, "The Wailing" premiered at 891 movie theaters across the nation on Wednesday night and attracted over 170-thousand moviegoers. The film is a fictional thriller surrounding a series of mysterious murders that happened in a farming village.

As a result, “Captain America: Civil War” dipped to second place after retaining the top spot for two weeks since its opening on April 27th. The Hollywood blockbuster has so far drawn more than seven million viewers in South Korea.

The South Korean film was invited to the Out of Competition section of the 69th Cannes Film Festival, which opened on Wednesday.
