S. Korean Violinmaker Sweeps Top Spots at Int’l Competition

A South Korean violinmaker based in Italy has swept the top awards at an international competition considered to be one of the world’s most prestigious.

According to the Henryk Wieniawski Music Society Web site, violins produced by Park Ji-hwan won the first and second prizes in the 13th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Making Competition held from May eighth to the 15th in the Polish city of Poznań.

Some 120 violins were reviewed, but 34-year-old Park’s Orso won the Grand Prix while Park’s Masha won second place.

The Wieniawski violin competitions were founded in 1935 to commemorate Henryk Wieniawski(1835-1880), who was a Polish violinist and composer. The international violin making competition is held every five years.
