U.S. to Relocate Yongsan Garrison to Osan and Pyeongtaek

A top U.S. military official here said Thursday that the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) has decided to relocate its troops from the Yongsan garrison in Seoul to Osan and Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi Province.

In an interview with a local radio station, General Leon J. LaPorte, the USFK commander, said South Korea and the United States had agreed to relocate U.S. troops in Seoul to Osan air base and Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek.

The commander stressed the USFK would not have any problem carrying out its duties following the southward relocation, adding that some 1,000 military personnel and family members of the United Nations Command (UNC) as well as the Combined Forces Command would remain in the capital city.
