Civic groups of several countries have submitted an application in a bid to list historical records on Japan's wartime sexual slavery on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
An international committee established for the cause announced in Seoul on Wednesday that it submitted the application to the UNESCO Memory of the World headquarters on Tuesday.
The committee set up in May last year is made up of 14 civic groups from eight countries, including South Korea, China, Japan and the Netherlands.
The committee said that it is pursuing the listing of the records under the name, "the voice of sexual slavery victims," in honor of the victims who took the first step toward justice when they mustered up courage and unveiled their stories.
The records, two-thousand-744 items in all, were collected from eleven countries. They include victims' testimonies, audio tapes, photos, medical and other records proving that Japan operated military brothels.
