German Nun who Served in Post-War S. Korea Dies at 106

A German nun who worked as a nurse at a hospital in South Korea's port city of Busan following the Korean War has died at the age of 106.

Charlotte Koch's niece and a sisters facility in Oldenburg, Germany where she spent her last years notified the South Korean Embassy on Thursday that she died on May 24th.

Her funeral will be held June 20th only attended by family members and close friends.

On hearing the news, South Korean Ambassador to Berlin Lee Kyung-soo expressed condolences.

Koch founded a Red Cross sisters' society in Oldenburg in the suburbs of Bremen in 1947. She served as a nurse at a German Red Cross hospital in Busan for two years in the mid-1950s. At the time, Germany sent over 100 medical staff to assist war-torn South Korea each year.

Koch shed tears of joy when Ambassador Lee expressed the Seoul government's gratitude for her service during her 106th birthday banquet this past April 20th.
