Translator of 'The Vegetarian' Elated over Han's Recognition

Deborah Smith, the British translator of Han Kang’s novel “The Vegetarian,” has visited South Korea to attend the Seoul International Book Fair.

At a news conference in southern Seoul Wednesday, Smith said that she is very happy that Han was recognized abroad as a great novelist for the elaborate structure, fierce images and poetic sentences in her work.

The 28-year-old said that many people in Britain are looking forward to reading Han’s other works and became interested in South Korean novels.

Smith said that her translation of "The Vegetarian" is not perfect, but translators pursue perfection although they know it is an unattainable goal.
