KSOC Upholds Decision to Ban Park Tae-hwan from Rio Olympics

The Korean Sport Olympic Committee(KSOC) has reaffirmed that it will not allow swimmer Park Tae-hwan to compete in the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The committee decided not to revise its rules on selecting athletes for the nation’s Olympic team in a meeting on Thursday.

Park finished serving an 18-month ban imposed by FINA, the world governing body of swimming, in early March this year after he failed a doping test in 2014. But under KSOC rules, athletes cannot compete on national teams for three years after serving penalties related to doping.

An executive at the KSOC explained that the committee upheld its decision after concluding that it is necessary to deliver a tough punishment to Park who breached athletes' morality.
