S. Korea Ranks Top in Digital News Consumption

A new survey shows that South Korean people are the largest consumers of online news services.

According to a survey of 53-thousand-330 people in 26 countries, which was jointly conducted by the Korea Press Foundation and the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, 48 percent of South Koreans keep up with the latest news on their smartphones. South Korea ranked at the top, followed by Sweden with 46 percent and Switzerland with 42 percent.

South Korea took ninth place in terms of the percentage of people following news online for a week, as 86 percent of its people reported the habit. Greece ranked top with 96 percent, and the Czech Republic and Brazil shared the second spot with 91 percent, trailed by Turkey with 90 percent.

South Korea was found to be near bottom at 28 percent, regarding the readership of printed news materials, such as newspapers and magazines. European countries, like Austria, Switzerland and Spain, posted a higher readership of printed news services.

Many South Koreans appear not to trust reports by news outlets, giving a score of two-point-89 on a five point scale. The figure is similar to those in other countries in the bottom rank—two-point-86 in France and two-point-85 in the U.S.
