A top official of the World Health Organization has announced that SARS, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, appears to be under control in Asia. The organization's Asia Pacific director Shigeru Omi made the remarks Tuesday in Cambodia at a meeting of the health ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, China, Japan and South Korea. The official said only a few new infections are being reported around the world each day, compared with dozens a day just a few months ago. The ten health ministers who attended the meeting asserted that their countries are now SARS-free, since no new cases of infection had been reported since May 11th.
