International Arbitration Court to Decide on Park Tae-hwan on Friday

The Court of Arbitration for Sport(CAS) is said to have delayed a decision on whether South Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan can represent the country during the upcoming Rio Olympics.

According to the former gold medalist's representatives on Friday, the Switzerland-based CAS sent an email to Park’s lawyers, informing that it will make a decision on Park on Friday, local time.

The CAS was initially scheduled to decide on the matter on Thursday.

The twenty-seven-year-old finished serving an 18-month international ban in early March this year after he failed a doping test in 2014. But under the Korea Olympic Committee(KOC) rules, athletes cannot compete for the national team for three years after doping suspensions.

On April 26th, Park filed an appeal against the KOC's rule with the Court of Arbitration for Sport(CAS), the highest sports tribunal, and later asked for the proceeding to be put on hold.

A Seoul court ruled last Friday that Park is eligible for the national team and that the KOC has no grounds to keep him from representing the country.

The KOC said in response that it will make a final decision on whether Park can compete in Rio after the CAS decides on the matter.

The Korea Swimming Federation is required to submit the list of South Korean swimmers to participate in the Rio Games to the International Swimming Federation by Friday.
