A project will be launched to correct mistranslations in menus of Korean dishes.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on Wednesday that they will pursue the project together with the National Institute of Korean Language, the Korea Tourism Organization, the Korean Food Foundation and the Korea Foodservice Industry Association.
The National Institute of Korean Language and the Korean Food Foundation will form a group of experts on food and foreign languages, including English, Chinese and Japanese, to come up with standardized writings for menus of Korean dishes.
The Korea Tourism Organization will launch a translation service for names of Korean dishes and foods that can be immediately used in restaurants.
Currently, there are 200 names of Korean dishes that have been standardized and three-thousand-700 that have yet to be standardized but have no mistranslation.
A separate Web site will be set up that will provide menus that can be used at restaurants upon entering the name of the Korean dish and selecting the preferred foreign language. Currently, such service is only available on the Web site of the Korea Tourism Organization.
The ministries and the organizations also plan to provide, together with search portals, a service in which standardized translation of food names in English, Chinese and Japanese will appear when the food name is typed into the search box.
