Local Governments Lure Tourists with Pokemon Go

Anchor: Pokemon Go has swept North America, Australia and New Zealand where the game is officially available. But a glitch in the mobile game has allowed South Koreans to pick up signals for the game in parts of the country. Local governments in remote parts of the nation are taking advantage of the craze to lure tourists.
Our Kim In-kyung has more.

Report: Pokemon Go, the mobile game taking the world by storm, hasn't officially launched in South Korea yet.

But gamers have found pockets in the country where the game works and now, some local governments are trying to take advantage of the rush of tourists.

Ulleung Island in the East Sea has recently partnered up with the North Gyeongsang Provincial Tourism Corporation to select ten Pokemon Go expeditionists from around the country. The participants, who were picked out of some 300 applicants, have been touring the nooks and crannies of the island since Wednesday.

For three days, they will play the augmented reality game on the island and in the process introduce its major attractions on social media and game communities. The provincial tourism corporation is also streaming their activities live on Facebook.

Sokcho, Gangwon Province, another area where the game can be played, has posted a Pokemon Go map on the city's Web site as well as a list of sites where supplementary phone batteries may be rented.

Sokcho Mayor Lee Byung-seon said his city will provide everything it can to meet the needs of visitors, especially families with children who come for their summer vacation. He also cited plans to expand free Wi-Fi zones to all parts of the city.

Sokcho is competing with other parts of Gangwon Province where the game is available. Goseong County has launched an event named Pokemon Go! Goseong Go! The county has slashed entrance fees at major attractions and is offering gifts to tourists who take selfies in front of regional attractions with Pokemon Go in it.

Pokemon Go, which is based on Google Maps, has only launched in North America, Australia and New Zealand so far. The South Korean government, meanwhile, has assured its security policies have nothing to do with the game not being available in the country yet. However, some gamers believe South Korea's refusal to allow Google a license to use South Korean maps unless it blurs out sensitive military locations on its mapping service, is blocking the game from being launched here.
