A K-pop contest was held in Brazil's largest city of Sao Paulo on Thursday wishing for a successful hosting of the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics.

The contest began at 6 p.m. at Gazeta Theatre in downtown Sao Paulo. Seventeen teams that passed the first preliminary round competed in two categories of singing and dance.

Fans of the Korean Wave, students at the Korean Cultural Center in the city and others totaling some 700 people packed the theater as contestants showcased their K-pop talent.

The winning team, representing Brazil, will compete in the K-pop World Festival opening in the South Korean city of Changwon in September.
