S. Korean Men's Olympic Team Suffers 2 Injuries After 1-0 Loss to Iraq in Olympic Prep Match

Anchor: The South Korean men's Olympic team lost two of its players to injury as they were defeated by Iraq 1-0 on Sunday in a friendly match ahead of next month's Rio Summer Games, leaving South Korea's hope for a second Olympic medal in the balance.

Report: South Korea's aspiration for its second Olympic football medal was left hanging in the balance after defensive midfielder Lee Chan-dong and forward Suk Hyun-jun went off injured in an Olympic tune-up match against Iraq on Sunday.

Suk went down early in the first half after a strong tackle from an Iraqi defender, injuring his left rib. He was replaced by Kim Min-tae.

Head coach Shin Tae-yong started Suk as a lone striker in a four-two-three-one formation. The FC Porto forward was picked by Shin as one of three over-age "wild cards" in the under-23 squad.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min and Guangzhou R&F defender Jang Hyun-soo are the other "wild cards" and are yet to join the national Olympic side in Brazil. 

Son and Jang, along with two other players, are set to join the squad late this month.

Lee Chan-dong of Gwangju FC also went down late in the opening half after challenging for a loose ball. He injured his right ankle and was swapped with Lee Chang-min.

A Korea Football Association(KFA) official said that the the condition of the two players need to be confirmed. Suk and Lee is to be treated at a nearby hospital on Monday. 

South Korea's Olympic squad conceded a goal in the 15th minute of the first half and was unable to overcome the deficit, despite several attempts on goal.

The head coach said after the match that his players succumbed to Iraq's physical play, but was satisfied with the second-half performance.

Shin's side will play Sweden, also in Sao Paulo, on Friday before next month's Rio Games. 

South Korea won the bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics and is looking to win their second medal in Rio. The under-23 side have been place in Group C with Fiji, Germany and Mexico - the reigning gold medalists.
