7 S. Korean Buddhist Temples Selected as UNESCO List Candidates

Seven of South Korea’s traditional Buddhist mountain temples have been selected as application candidates to a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for next year.

A committee seeking to put the South Korean temples on the UNESCO list said on Tuesday that it was asked to submit an application again after supplementing the content by the cultural properties committee under the Cultural Heritage Administration, which made the selection last week.

The cultural properties committee plans to make a final decision on whether to apply for the UNESCO list after reviewing the supplemented application in November. If the committee approves the revised application, it will submit the application to UNESCO in January next year.

The seven Buddhist mountain temples are the temples of Tongdo, Buseok, Bongjeong, Beopju, Magok, Seonam, and Daeheung.
