The central region experienced the hottest day of this summer so far on Thursday as the daytime high surged to 36 degrees Celsius in Seoul.

Afternoon highs in Chuncheon and Daejeon climbed up to 35 degrees Celsius, while the mercury peaked at 34 degrees in Gwangju and Daegu.

A heat wave warning was in effect for a second day in Seoul, while a heat wave advisory remained in place for most of the other regions in the nation, excluding the east coast and eastern parts of Gangwon Province.

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecast that western regions and inland areas will continue to witness high temperatures as hot air remains above the Korean Peninsula.

The Ministry of Public Safety and Security projected that Gyeonggi Province, South Jeolla Province and North Gyeongsang Province are expected to declare the highest level on the heatwave alert scale this week. The ministry advised people to refrain from going outside during the day, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
