Nation Remains in Grip of Scorching Heat

South Korea remains in the grip of unrelenting heat waves, with heat advisories in place for most parts of the nation.

On Friday, afternoon highs surged to 36 degrees Celsius in Seoul, breaking the previous record of 35-point-seven degrees set a day earlier. The mercury also rose to 36 degrees in Daejeon, and 35 in Gwangju and Daegu.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that inland areas will continue to see scorching days until Saturday, as the nation is under the influence of hot air from northern China.

As of 11 a.m. on Friday, a heatwave warning was issued for Seoul, Sejong, Daegu, Daejeon, Gyeonggi Province and some regions in the Gyeongsang, Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Heatwave advisories remain in effect across most of the nation.

A heatwave advisory is issued when daytime highs peak at 33 degrees or higher for two straight days or more. A heatwave warning is declared when afternoon highs are tallied at 35 degrees or above for two straight days or more.
