South Korea Draws 3-3 with Germany in Second Group C Olympic Men's football

Anchor: The South Korean men's Olympic football team drew 3-3 in their second group C match against Germany in Brazil on Sunday delaying their chance of grabbing a quarterfinal spot. Team Korea will now have to secure at least a draw against Mexico on Wednesday to progress to the last eight.

Reporter: South Korea missed out on its chance to go straight to the Rio Olympic football quarterfinals as they drew 3-3 with Germany at Fonte Nova Arena in Salvador on Sunday.

Hwang Hee-Chan got South Korea on the scoreboard in the 25th minute, but was quickly answered by Germany's Serge Gnabry eight minutes later.

In the second half, Davie Selke put Germany on top in the 55th, but Son Heung-min leveled the scoring immediately after with a left-footed shot to make it 2-2.

Suk Hyun-Jun thought he'd scored a dramatic winner for Team Korea in the 86th, but Gnabry came up for Germany again, scoring a free kick in the 92nd minute to salvage a point for his team.

South Korea would have gone straight through to the quarterfinals if they had won Sunday's match.

They now have to get at least a draw with Mexico Wednesday. If they lose, South Korea would have to hope Fiji beat Germany on the same day.

Mexico are tied with South Korea in Group C with four points after defeating Fiji 5-1 earlier on Sunday.

However, thanks to South Korea's 8-0 demolition against Fiji last Thursday, coach Shin Tae-yong's side still sit atop of the group on goal difference.

If South Korea and Mexico have a goalless draw and Germany beat Fiji by more than four goals in their respective final group stages, then South Korea and Germany will progress to the last eight.

South Korea is looking for their second consecutive Olympic football medal after winning bronze in London 2012, but will have a tough match against Mexico, who are the reigning Olympic champions.
