S. Korean Women’s Volleyball Team Loses to Russia

South Korea’s women’s volleyball team put up a good fight but could not prevail over Russia at the Rio Olympic Games on Monday.

Led by head coach Lee Jung-chul, the South Korean team was beaten by Russia 1-3 in its second group preliminary match.

The defeat comes amid high expectations that the South Korean squad could smoothly advance to quarterfinals, following its crushing victory over Japan last Saturday.

Despite a powerful play by Kim Yeon-koung and Yang Hyo-jin, South Korea was unable to pick up another win due to the strong showing of Russia’s Nataliya Goncharova and Tatiana Tatiana Kosheleva, who earned a combined 44 points.

With one victory and one defeat so far, Team Korea must win more matches in order to obtain a berth to the quarterfinals. South Korea, with the latest defeat, has lost to Russia in all eight of their Olympic matches.

Team Korea will face off with Argentina on Wednesday evening local time.
