No. of Moviegoers Sees New Monthly Record in July

The number of moviegoers posted a new monthly record last month thanks to the strong popularity of South Korean films.

According to the Korean Film Council Wednesday, some 26-point-two million people went to the movies last month, up nearly 12 percent from the same period last year. The figure was the highest monthly figure to be posted since related statistics began to be compiled in 2004.

The council estimated that out of the total, roughly 15-point-eight million people watched domestic movies, up more than 40 percent from July of 2015. That figure also marked a new high.

Meanwhile, the number of theatergoers who watched foreign films slid around 14 percent to some ten-point-four million during the same period.

As a result, domestic films saw their viewership ratio expand by 12-point-two percentage points from July 2015 to 60-point-one percent last month.

South Korean film "Train to Busan” was found to be the most popular, attracting some eight-point-four million audience members. The second most popular film was estimated to be American film, “Now You See Me 2,” followed by South Korean movie "Operation Chromite” and American animated comedy, “Finding Dory.”

Half of the top ten movies in terms of box office sales were South Korean and the other half were American.
