S. Korean Footballers Advance to Quarterfinals at Rio with 1-0 Win over Mexico

South Korea’s Olympic football team defeated Mexico 1-0 on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Kwon Chang-hoon scored the only goal of the match in the 77th minute at Mane Carrincha Stadium in Brasilia, extending Team Korea’s quest for a second consecutive Olympic medal after their bronze in London 2012

The South Korean team, led by coach Shin Tae-yong, will play with Group D runner-up Honduras in the last eight match at Belo Horizonte on Saturday.

South Korea's win over Mexico helped secure them seven points in total, following an 8-0 victory over Fiji and a 3-3 draw with Germany and has finished the group play as Group C winners.

Germany routed Fiji 10-0 on Wednesday to progress to the knockout stage as Group C runner-up. They will play against Group D winner Portugal at the quarterfinal on Saturday.
