Peak Time of Perseid Meteor Shower Expected from 10 P.M. Friday

As many as 150 meteor sightings per hour are forecast Friday night during this year's Perseid meteor shower.

The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute said the best views of the cosmic show can be seen between 10 p.m. and half past midnight for viewers in South Korea.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is observed every August. The Perseids are made of tiny space debris scattered by the comet Swift-Tuttle. They put on a brilliant meteor shower when they clash with the Earth's atmosphere and create a blaze.

The meteoroids are expected to enter the atmosphere at a speed of approximately 59 kilometers per second. The Perseids are called as such because the point from which they appear to come lies in the constellation Perseus. But in fact, they have little to do with the constellation.

This year, with the space debris closer to Earth drawn by Jupiter's gravity, as many as 150 shooting stars are expected to be observed per hour, to be the most prolific Perseid meteor shower since 2009.
