The country’s soccer team lost to Honduras 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the men’s soccer tournament, losing a chance to win an Olympic medal for the second straight time. The country won the bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
In the quarterfinals, Honduras’ Alberth Elis scored a winning goal in the 14th minute of the second half in Belo Horizonte.
South Korea was shut out of the podium on Saturday, with its athletes falling short of finals in fencing and shooting.
The South Korean women's sabre fencing team of Kim Ji-yeon, Hwang Seon-a, Seo Ji-yeon and Yoon Ji-su was knocked out of the quarterfinals and finished fifth at Carioca Arena 3.
In shooting, pistol shooter Kim Jun-hong and Kang Min-soo failed to reach the final in the men’s 25m rapid fire event.
Sprinter Kim Kuk-young was eliminated in the men's 100m heat, finishing his race in 10-point-37 seconds.
South Korean golfer Ah Byeong-hun tied for the 14th spot in men’s golf at the Olympic Golf Course, with three-under 210 for the tournament.
South Korea lost to Singapore in the quarterfinals of the women's table tennis team event.
The men's badminton doubles team of Lee Yong-dae and Yoo Yeon-seong lost to Russia and finished second in their group, but it had already secured a spot in the quarterfinals.
South Korea currently stands in eighth place in the medal tally as of 9:30 a.m. on Sunday with six gold, three silver and four bronze medals.
