Whether South Korea will be able to produce another member of the International Olympic Committee(IOC) Athletes’ Commission will be decided on Thursday.
A total of 23 Olympians, including South Korea's table tennis star athlete Ryu Seung-min, are vying for the four new slots at the Commission.
Based on the votes by the athletes participating at the Rio Olympics, the IOC will announce the list of the four new members on Thursday in the Olympic Village.
The elected will receive final approval for their membership at an IOC Session on Sunday - the closing day of the Rio Summer Games.
The new Commission members will serve an eight-year term with the same entitlements as other IOC members, including voting rights at IOC plenary sessions.
There are a total of 15 members of the Athletes’ Commission, with eight selected from the Summer Olympics, four from the Winter Olympics and three appointed by the IOC president.
South Korea currently has two IOC members, including Samsung Electronics’ chairman Lee Kun-hee and taekwondo athlete Moon Dae-sung, whose Athletes' Commission membership is soon to expire.
