S. Korean Golfers Chase Gold Medal in Rio

South Korean female golfer Park In-bee cruised her way to the top of the leaderboard after the second round in Rio, getting one step closer to clinching the gold medal.

Park traded six birdies with a bogey at the halfway point of women's golf at the Olympic Golf Course on Thursday. With a stellar five-under 66 performance for a second day in a row, Park is now leading the pack, a stroke ahead of runner-up Stacey Lewis of the U.S.

Chun In-gee finished tied for eighth at six-under, carding two eagles along the way.

Amy Yang had a six-under 65, including seven birdies and a bogey, and is tied for 17th, while Kim Sei-young, who finished the first round tied with Park, tumbled with a two-over par performance and sat tied for 22nd.

In badminton, Jung Kyung-eun and Shin Seung-chan secured South Korea’s only medal in the sport at Rio, beating Tan Yunating and Yu Yang of China by a set score of 2-0 in the bronze medal match of the women’s doubles competition.

The country came short of winning its second gold medal in taekwondo, as Lee Dae-hoon fell to Jordan’s Ahmad Abughaush 11-8 in the quarterfinal of the men’s under 68-kilogram division.

The London Olympic silver medalist did, however, manage to reach the podium after beating Jaouad Achab of Belgium 11-7 in the bronze medal match.

In Kayak, South Korean pair of Cho Gwang-hee and Choi Min-kyu finished ninth in the men’s double 200-meter final.

South Korea still remains in eleventh place in the medal standings, with seven gold, three silver and eight bronze.
