No. of Moviegoers Tops 73Mln during Summer Heat Wave

The number of moviegoers topped 73 million this summer.

According to the data compiled by the Korean Film Council on Saturday, 73-point-19 million people watched movies at local theaters during the June-August period.

The figure represents an on-year increase of six-point-eight percent and marks a record high of the summer season in South Korea.

The increase is partly attributed to the sultry weather as more people sought to avoid the scorching heat at theaters. The release of box office hits such as "Train to Busan," "Operation Chromite" and "The Last Princess" is also believed to have boosted the number of moviegoers.

The market share of Korean films reached a record high of 60 percent during the summer period.
