The Voice of America(VOA) said Tuesday that the death toll from a devastating flood that battered the northeastern parts of North Korea reached 60.
The VOA said that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs quoted the North’s data as saying that a total of 60 people have died and 25 have gone missing due to the flood so far.
The report said that the city of Hoeryong and the counties of Musan, Gyeongwon and Yeonsa, all in North Hamgyong Province, were hit hardest, forcing the evacuation of around 44-thousand residents.
VOA added that the floods left 112 kilometers of roads and around ten-thousand hectares of arable land under water, destroyed 44-hundred buildings and damaged 43-hundred houses. In particular, some three-thousand-650 houses were affected by the flood in Yeonsa county alone.
Last Friday, the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency reported that Typhoon Lionrock caused a devastating flood along the Tumen River, the worst in the region. Fifteen people were reported missing in North Hamgyong Province alone.
