Activist Campaigning to Remove Rising Sun Flag to Protest Against Japan

A South Korean activist campaigning to remove Japan’s “rising sun flag” says he will lodge a protest against Japanese authorities as the World War II flag is being sold at major tourist venues in Tokyo.

After finding the flag design at an exhibition hall at Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine in May, Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women's University asked South Korean students studying in Japan and others to inform him of other such cases.

Seo found out that rising sun flags, as well as stickers and other items, were being sold at stores in front of Tokyo's Sensoji Temple and Mount Fuji.

He received reports that foreign tourists were taking photos after buying 840-yen rising sun flags and 100-yen stickers and wearing headbands with the designs.
