A group of Peace Corps volunteers who worked in South Korea between 1966 and 1981 is visiting the nation.
The visit by some 90 former volunteers and their families comes at the invitation of the Korea International Cooperation Agency(KOICA).
The group toured around major facilities of the cooperation agency in Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province and received an explanation about South Korea’s official development assistance and projects by World Friends Korea.
Volunteers of the American volunteer program assisted South Korea’s efforts to rebuild itself after the Korean War. Among key programs were teaching English and fighting tuberculosis at clinics.
Among the group is former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Kathleen Stephens. As a Peace Corps volunteer in South Korea in 1975, Stephens taught English at Yesan Middle School in South Chungcheong Province.
KOICA President Kim In-shik said that this year is significant as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps’ dispatch of volunteers to South Korea.
Kim said to mark the occasion, KOICA invited former volunteers to express gratitude. He added that KOICA will work to further expand international cooperation projects between the Peace Corps and South Korean volunteer groups.
