Return Traffic Congests Major Highways after Chuseok

Expressways across the nation became congested on Friday, the third day of the Chuseok holiday as South Koreans began returning home after visiting their families.

The Korea Expressway Corporation estimated that it would take about five hours and 50 minutes from the southern port city of Busan to the capital Seoul in the early afternoon. The 450-kilometer trip takes around four and a half hours on regular days.

The road authority said it would take six hours and ten minutes from Gwangju to Seoul, three hours and 40 minutes from Gangneung to Seoul and two hours 50 minutes from Daejeon to Seoul on Friday.

Congestion on the northbound lanes is expected to peak between 4 and 5 p.m. and the traffic flow will likely ease up early Saturday morning.

The corporation expects four-point-64 million vehicles will use the expressways on Friday with 480-thousand of them entering Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.
