S. Korea, China, Japan Adopt Pyeongchang Declaration

The sports ministers of South Korea, China and Japan have adopted the “Pyeongchang Declaration” that seeks to boost and firmly establish future-oriented exchange and cooperation.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Cho Yoon-sun and her Japanese counterpart Hirokazu Matsuno and Chinese counterpart Liu Peng unveiled the declaration on Friday after holding talks in Pyeongchang in Gangwon Province.

The ministers adopted the declaration with the aim to successfully host the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Cho said that with the declaration, the three countries will seek to establish future-oriented exchanges and cooperation in sports based on the recognition that related exchanges and coordination play a vital role in expanding mutual understanding.

The three ministers vowed to expand a sports exchange culture among their countries by promoting sports for women, youths, the disabled and the elderly. They also pledged to work for social development via sports.

The three nations agreed to regularly hold their sports ministers' talks with the second meeting set for 2018 in Japan.
