'Earthquake of Magnitude 8 or Higher Unlikely on Korean Peninsula'

A major earthquake with a magnitude of eight and above is not likely to strike the Korean Peninsula.

Doctor Jeon Jeong-soo with the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources addressed reports about the possibility of a massive quake measuring between five-point-eight and eight-point-three during a briefing at the Government Complex in Gwacheon.

He affirmed that this is not the case and that the maximum magnitude of eight-point-three was an estimate derived from mere experiments. He explained that the prediction is unrealistic and can not be accepted.

He said that most experts believe an earthquake greater than a magnitude of six-point-five is unlikely on the peninsula.
