South Korea’s national football team defeated Qatar 3-2 on Thursday to claim their second victory in the final qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
During the match held at Suwon World Cup Stadium, Ki Sung-yueng, Ji Dong-won and Son Heung-min scored to complete a dramatic comeback against their Middle East opponents.
Ki put Team Korea ahead first with a goal in the eleventh minute, but Qatar’s Hasan Al Haydos leveled it 1-1 five minutes later. Qatar began to lead South Korea with Andres Quintana’s goal in the 45th minute, before Ji and Son turned the table in the 56th and 58th minutes.
It was Son’s 50th appearance with South Korea's national football team, making the 24-year-old Tottenham Hotspur striker the third player to do so among South Korean players born in 1980 or after.
With seven points from three matches, South Korea is runner-up in Group A, trailing Iran only by goal difference. The Korean team will leave for Tehran on Friday for its next match against Iran slated for next Tuesday.
