Golfer Park In-bee Receives Top National Sports Award

South Korean golfer and Olympic gold medalist Park In-bee has received a national award for excellence in sport.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced nine recipients of the 54th Korea Sports Awards in a ceremony held at the National Museum of Korea on Friday, one day ahead of the National Day of Sports.

Park won the presidential award in the sports competition category, which recognized her many feats as a professional golfer including her gold medal win at the Rio Summer Olympics earlier this year.

The top honor was also given to those selected in six other categories, including coaching, research and sports for people with disabilities.

The ministry also awarded 115 other people in recognition of their contribution to the development of the nation’s sports.

Star figure skater Kim Yu-na received a Chongryong Medal, the highest decoration in the nation's Order of Sport Merit, in the ceremony on Friday.

Of the 115, 79 were given orders of merit medals, including the 13 Cheongryong Medal winners. Twenty-nine were granted medals of honor, while seven received commendations.

The annual awards are granted to lift the morale of domestic athletes and promote sports.
