The Seoul Metropolitan Government held a ceremony on Thursday to mark the resumption of water taxi rides on the Han River after a two-year suspension.
The city government said water taxi operations will resume next Monday, two years after the sinking of the ill-fated Sewol ferry in the southeastern coast in 2014.
The operator has also been changed from Cheonghaejin Marine Company, the owner of the Sewol, to an organization of former military intelligence agents.
The existing eight water taxis have been revamped and two more units will be added next year.
Apart from their use as a commuter transport service, Han River water taxis will also be utilized for tourism purposes.
Water taxi tours will serve as a way of transport to tourist destinations and provide sights available along the Han River, such as the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain show and programs to watch winter birds, sunset and Seoul’s nightscape.
The Seoul city government will collaborate with domestic and foreign travel agencies to develop more programs in which water taxis can be used.
