The Korean Culture Week kicked off in Washington D.C. on Thursday to promote Korea’s traditional and modern cultures.

Hosted by the Korean Culture Center in the U.S. capital, programs began at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Throughout the three-day event, Korea’s cultural troupes will take to the stage to show off various performing art pieces, including the non-verbal show “Nanta” and traditional performances such as shinawi, pansori, namdogutgeori, seongjupuri and seungmu.

'Darkness PoomBa,' a reinterpretation of South Korean traditional dance moves, will also be staged by South Korea’s Modern Table Company.

An official of the Korean Culture Center expressed hope that the annual event will expand Korea’s cultural base by showcasing an ensemble of Korea’s traditional and modern elements.
