KBS to Share Knowhow on Disaster Broadcasting with Asia-Pacific Broadcasters

Anchor: KBS has introduced its disaster-related broadcasting system at the latest Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union's(ABU) General Assembly and agreed to share it with other Asian countries. Broadcasters across the Asian-Pacific region have expressed keen interest in acquiring the knowhow, considering many countries in the area frequently witness natural disasters.

Report: Around 60 public broadcasters in Asia and the Pacific have expressed their desire to have in place effective disaster broadcasting systems in order to swiftly report on the circumstances and alleviate damages that result in the event of a disaster.

During the 53rd General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union(ABU) that ran for two days in Bali, Indonesia through Tuesday, KBS introduced its around-the-clock disaster broadcasting system utilizing six-thousand closed-circuit televisions(CCTVs) installed around the country.

KBS President Ko Dae-young explained measures that make use of mobile devices can greatly enhance the efficiency of the disaster broadcasting system.

"I want to develop every KBS mobile platform to be a channel that the audience can turn to in times of disasters."
 
Ko also pledged that KBS will share its knowhow on disaster broadcasting with other public broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific region.

ABU Chairman Joao Francisco Pinto underlined the importance of broadcasting in times of disaster and emergency.

"[Having] broadcasting complex which is resilient to natural disasters and having staff which have been trained to act on the natural disasters are the two most important things."
 
During the general meeting, the 69 member countries voted unanimously to elect KBS President Ko as the 15th president of the ABU.

Ko said he will work hard for the bloc so as to help the broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific draft effective strategies to adapt to mobile and digital environments. He said he will also try to enhance the competitiveness of the contents provided by member broadcasters.

The ABU is the largest international organization of broadcasters in the region spanning 278 members.
