Film director Bong Joon-ho has received an artistic honor bestowed by the French government for his contribution to the arts.
The 47-year-old director known for a slew of films including "Snowpiercer" has been made an Officer(Officier) in the Order of Arts and Letters.
He received the medal Thursday from French Minister of State for State Reform and Simplification Jean-Vincent Placé during the opening ceremony for a French cinema showcase titled the French Cinema Tour 2016 held in Seoul.
The likes of Tim Burton, Elton John, Sharon Stone and Korean veteran actress Yun Jung-hee have previously been named an officer, which ranks second among the three grades in the Order of Arts and Letters granted by the French Culture Ministry.
The honor is given to artists with distinguished creativity or who have contributed greatly to French or international culture.
Bong, who also directed box office hits such as "Memories of Murder" and "The Host," is currently working on "Okja," a fantasy film about a young girl's friendship with a mysterious creature. It's slated for release next year.
